18 Oct What Should You Look Forward to When Visiting Santorini, Greece
Off the coast of Greece sits a 29.2 square mile island known as Santorini. During the 16th century, the island was devastated by an enormous volcanic eruption, giving it the rugged landscape that now fascinates tourists and archeologists alike. Whether you’re looking for a great place to bask in the sun while enjoying a book and a glass of wine, or if you’re interested in ancient history, Santorini has more than enough to offer, and we at Must Do Travels can’t wait to help you plan your trip.
Hike from Fira to Oia
This gorgeous hike will take you from village to village, starting at Fira and continuing through Firostefani, Imerovigli and finally to Oia. As you hike, the trail climbs higher and higher, giving you gorgeous views of the volcano, the sea and the caldera the entire way. In total, this hike can take about 4 to 5 hours, so it’s best to leave mid-morning so that you arrive in Oia around lunchtime, grab a bite to eat and then take the bus back to Fira.
What more do we need to say? Santorini wine is delicious and their wineries are beautiful, too. Booking a tour is probably the best way to experience more than one winery, but if you’re the type who likes to forge their own path, no one will stop you.
Remember that volcanic eruption we talked about earlier? It turns out that entire villages were preserved beneath the magma and they are now possible to tour. The city of Akrotiri was discovered by archeologists in 1860, but the buildings date all the way back to at least 1700 B.C. History buffs, enjoy!
If you’re interested in learning more about the volcano, why not do it in person? Nea Kameni sits at the center of the caldera. Hop on a boat and head over to this volcanic island where a tour guide will gladly take you on the steep and rocky climb up to the crater, letting you explore the fascinating lava formations along the way. Plus once again, the views are incredible!
Open Air Cinema
On Santorini, you don’t have to choose between enjoying the perfect weather and having a classic date. The open-air cinema in Kamari Village is one of the best outdoor cinemas in the world, complete with directors chairs, specialty cocktails and of course, popcorn!
Scuba Diving or Snorkeling
If you’re on an island, the chances are pretty good that you enjoy going in the water, and Santorini does not disappoint when it comes to Scuba Diving or Snorkeling options. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, if you’re interested in descending into the Aegean Sea, a Must Do Travels agent will be more than happy to help you book your trip!
So what’s not to love about Santorini? With hiking, wine, a very rich history, volcanoes and spectacular weather, this Greek island is almost too good to be true! Ready to book your trip? We recommend going between late April and early November, but the great thing about Greece is that there’s rarely a bad time to go, so let’s look at your calendar and start planning!
