04 Jun An Ancient Wonder: Bora Bora
Bora Bora is in the South Pacific northwest of Tahiti. Surrounded by sapphire and emerald lagoons, coral reef, and sand-fringed Motus – this is an island of wonder and romance. Like many south pacific islands, you cannot help but feel enchanted and hypnotized by the island’s aura. The island’s divine presence is not new. Ancient people named the island, “Pora pora mai te pora” which translates in Tahitian to “created by the gods.”
Fitting name, but “Pora Pora” was easier to say. Eventually, the name became “Bora Bora”, proof that the “Telephone” game we played in grade school was not in vain. When the Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, arrived at the island, he adopted and popularized the name: “Bora Bora.” Today the island is regularly explored as a popular vacation destination.
Matira Beach is one of the best, free beaches in Bora Bora. Consequently, it’s a popular place. Who doesn’t like free? The beach will greet you with crystalline waters and clean, white sand. Despite being so popular, Matira is rarely crowded making it a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the sun.
Positioned in the center of Bora Bora is the extinct volcano, Mount Otemanu. The mountain looks over the tiny island escalating 2,400 feet above the lagoon bordering Mount Otemanu. You can explore the mountain in many ways, such as taking a boat ride. Gaze at its majesty during a swim in the lagoon, go hiking or take a helicopter tour. However you experience Mount Otemanu, the sleeping giant will impress you.
The Coral Gardens offer a breathtaking snorkeling excursion. Home to many exotic, tropical fish of nearly every color imaginable, you will want to spend at least a day exploring the gardens. Your trip to Bora Bora is not complete without snorkeling. Remember to treat the coral with care; it’s a living organism. Do not stand on the reef. Enjoy the impeccable beauty of the gardens, but do your best not to touch the coral because this can kill the reef.
